Parting
13"H x 18"W
Bronze, Edition of 12
This young woman was from Kawaii, HI. and came to South Lake Tahoe to ski and also study at our community college. Our modeling session in 1994 coincided with a major hurricane devastating her island and she shared her concerns for family and friends back home. I see this in my translation as I felt her concern as well while sculpting. The original terracotta remains in my studio to this day.
The clay study was the first I had cast in bronze at a foundry and it awakened me of how the translation of mediums from terracotta to bronze affects the life of the sculpture. I learned that I needed to metal chase, patina and control my own work as not to lose my signature, my thumbprints and tool markings because they are part of the process, and of the profound expression.
When I look at a master's work of art, these are the signature marks I look for and admire and relate to. It is what makes the work remarkable!
